Not so long ago, Martin was a gifted mathematician with a promising career and a steady girlfriend. But after a period in psychiatric care, he is released into a world where he has lost everything—no job, no support system, and burdened by the stigma of being labeled mentally ill. Viktor, a young Ukrainian boy, is left orphaned after his mother’s tragic overdose. When their paths cross, Martin becomes an unlikely guardian to Viktor, and together they flee the harsh realities of the city, seeking refuge in the forest. There, they build a sturdy hut, carving out a simple but fulfilling life amidst nature. Though their back-to-basics existence is far from easy, it offers a sense of peace and freedom that contrasts sharply with the struggles they left behind. Over time, their bond deepens into a firm friendship, providing each other with the companionship and understanding they both desperately need. Martin even finds a kindred spirit in Lena, a compassionate young woman whom he inspires to embrace a more idealistic way of living. Just as Martin begins to glimpse happiness, the outside world intrudes, threatening to shatter their fragile sanctuary. Director Hans Weingartner, best known for *The Edukators*, returns to the themes of his debut feature *The White Noise* (LFF 2000), crafting a poignant and empathetic portrayal of mental illness and resilience. *Hut in the Woods* presents its characters with warmth and authenticity, blending their struggles and triumphs with a delicate, understated touch.
