Six months have passed since Dr. Ogden moved to Buffalo, and Det. Murdoch is constantly at loggerheads with her replacement, Dr. Francis. While Insp. Brackenreid thinks highly of Francis, who was recruited from Scotland Yard, Murdoch finds him stubborn and unimaginative. Francis also seems in no rush to help Murdoch with his latest case, where human body parts were discovered on a riverbank encased in cement. A homeless man living in the nearby woods is questioned but later released. Frustrated by the lack of progress, Murdoch corresponds with Dr. Ogden through letters, and she provides him with valuable insights. He also seeks assistance from retired detective Malcolm Lamb, who offers a fresh perspective. As the investigation deepens, Murdoch uncovers a possible connection to an old, unsolved case—a brutal rape and murder that occurred many years earlier. Determined to solve both mysteries, Murdoch must navigate bureaucratic obstacles and his strained relationship with Dr. Francis while piecing together clues from the past and present. The case tests his deductive skills and forces him to confront the lingering shadows of unresolved justice.
