Morse finds himself the subject of a murder investigation when his friend, Beryl Newsome, is murdered at a rehearsal of the Magic Flute. In a moment of poor judgment, Morse touches the murder weapon, compromising the crime scene. As a result, he is suspended from duty, and DCI Bottomley takes over the case with DS Lewis assisting. Convinced he was framed, Morse begins reviewing his past cases, suspecting that one of the criminals he arrested may now be seeking revenge. The situation escalates when mysterious masonic symbols are scratched onto his car, leading him to wonder if the Freemasons are involved. Shortly after, he is reported for erratic driving, further straining his reputation. The investigation takes a darker turn when a significant number of Morse’s personal belongings are discovered in Beryl’s apartment, making him the prime suspect. With mounting evidence against him, Morse is arrested, forcing him to fight not only to clear his name but also to uncover the true killer before it’s too late.
