Henry Fallon, a wheelchair-bound man suffering from a neurological disorder, is found dead in an apparent suicide. Inspector Morse is assigned to the case but struggles with mixed emotions, as he was once engaged to the victim's wife, Susan Fallon. The body was discovered by Peter Rhodes, Fallon's son-in-law and a local antiques dealer, while Susan was away in London. When Fallon's doctor reveals that Henry lacked the physical ability to hold a gun to his head, Morse and his team realize the death may actually be murder. Further investigation uncovers a failed business arrangement between Fallon and Rhodes, making Rhodes a prime suspect. Throughout the case, Sergeant Lewis worries that Morse's past connection to Susan Fallon could cloud his judgment. Despite these concerns, Morse remains focused, and the truth eventually comes to light, exposing the real culprits behind the crime.
