Edward Dunstan is an artist obsessed by his muse. Every photograph and every movie conveyed only what he wanted to see, never truly capturing her essence. His muse waited in vain for him to see her as she was, but he remained blind to her reality. And so, like the mermaid in his latest movie who grew legs and left him, his muse too walks away. For months, his days and nights are consumed by watching her image on the screen, replaying moments that now feel hollow. His anger festers, then dissolves into self-pity, until finally, he reaches a quiet acceptance. Only in her absence does he understand the pain he inflicted—the way he reduced her to a reflection of his own desires. When his latest letter to her is returned unopened, he surrenders to his despair. In a final act of penance, he binds himself in chains and climbs into the very tank of water where his muse once spent countless unhappy hours—a prisoner of his own making, drowning in the weight of his regret.
