Mary, a poor farm girl, meets Tim just as word comes that war has been declared. Tim enlists in the army and goes to the battlefields of Europe, where he is wounded and loses the use of his legs. Home again, Tim is visited by Mary, and they are powerfully attracted to each other; but his physical handicap prevents him from declaring his love for her. Deeper complications set in when Martin, Tim's former sergeant and a bully, takes a shine to Mary. Despite Tim's reluctance, Mary remains devoted to him, seeing beyond his disability. Martin, jealous and manipulative, tries to drive a wedge between them, even spreading rumors about Tim's cowardice during the war. As tensions rise, Tim must confront his insecurities and find the courage to stand up for his love. Meanwhile, Mary faces pressure from her family to marry someone more "suitable." In a climactic confrontation, Tim exposes Martin's true nature, proving his bravery and loyalty. Ultimately, Tim and Mary overcome societal prejudices and personal doubts, declaring their love and promising to face the future together, proving that true love transcends physical limitations.
