Benjy Stone (Mark Linn-Baker) is the junior writer on a top-rated variety/comedy live television show in the mid-1950s. Young and inexperienced, Benjy idolizes the show's veteran star, Alan Swann (Peter O'Toole), a washed-up Hollywood actor with a penchant for drinking and womanizing. Benjy also has a crush on his coworker, K.C. Downing (Jessica Harper), but rather than asking her out properly, he awkwardly and persistently tries to get her to sleep with him, often failing miserably. When the show's headliner suddenly drops out, Benjy is tasked with keeping Swann sober and ready for the live broadcast.
