When William Gridley arrives from the US in London, he rents part of Carly Hardwicke's house from her and promptly begins to fall in love. Gridley doesn't know that many people think she killed her husband, but his boss, the American ambassador, knows and doesn't take this "lapse of judgement" lightly. Since Carly is also American, Gridley saves his job by introducing her to the ambassador, who is promptly smitten and promises to help her. Meanwhile, Carly's past continues to haunt her as rumors swirl about her involvement in her husband's mysterious death. When a determined Scotland Yard detective arrives, determined to uncover the truth by any means necessary, Gridley and the ambassador agree to assist—though their motives are far from straightforward. As the investigation unfolds, a series of misunderstandings, romantic entanglements, and farcical mishaps ensue. Gridley finds himself torn between his growing feelings for Carly and his professional obligations, while the ambassador's infatuation complicates matters further.
