Steve and Susan Ireland are about to celebrate their 4th wedding anniversary by re-enacting their first date. However, Susan's meddling mother interrupts the romantic evening and accidentally injures herself. Steve is left to take care of his mother-in-law, but when he coincidentally meets an old flame in the elevator, Susan's mother sees this as the perfect opportunity to sabotage their marriage. She manipulates Susan into believing Steve is having an affair, leading Susan to file for divorce. Desperate to save his marriage, Steve comes up with a wild plan - he decides to pretend he's insane, hoping this drastic measure will make Susan reconsider their relationship.
