The historical rearguard last stand that took place on 13 July 1660 at a mountain pass in the vicinity of fort Vishalgad, near the city of Kolhapur, Maharashtra, India between the Maratha Warrior Baji Prabhu Deshpande and Siddi Masud of Adilshah Sultanate, known as Battle of Pavan Khind. This battle was a pivotal event during Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's escape from Panhala Fort to Vishalgad. Baji Prabhu Deshpande, along with 300 Maratha soldiers, held off a much larger Bijapuri force of over 10,000 troops led by Siddi Masud for several hours, allowing Shivaji to reach safety. The fierce resistance at the narrow mountain pass became legendary for its display of Maratha valor and sacrifice. Baji Prabhu continued fighting even after being severely wounded, only stopping when he heard the sound of cannon fire from Vishalgad signaling Shivaji's safe arrival. This heroic last stand is commemorated as one of the greatest examples of loyalty and bravery in Maratha history. The battle's name "Pavan Khind" translates to "Sacred Pass," honoring the martyrs who fell defending it.
