When the naval construction designer Oliver Reed (Kent Smith) meets the Serbian Irena Dubrovna Reed (Simone Simon) in the zoo, he flirts with her and they sooner fall in love and marry each other. However, Irena is afraid of an ancient curse of her town that women cannot be touched by a man, otherwise she will transform into a panther, and the couple does not consummate their marriage. As Oliver grows increasingly frustrated with their platonic relationship, he confides in his colleague Alice Moore (Jane Randolph), who harbors feelings for him. Irena becomes consumed by jealousy and paranoia, fearing the curse is real. Her mental state deteriorates, and she begins exhibiting feline behavior. When Oliver and Alice grow closer, Irena's transformation into a panther becomes inevitable. The film explores themes of sexuality, repression, and the supernatural, culminating in a tragic and haunting conclusion.
