Based on actual events of American serial killer Edmund Kemper, who murdered his grandparents at age 15 and, after being paroled for that crime, killed eight women in 1972 and 1973 including his own mother. Known as the "Co-ed Killer," Kemper targeted female college students, often picking up hitchhikers. He would later decapitate his victims and engage in necrophilia. After killing his mother and her friend, Kemper turned himself in to authorities. Diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, he was found legally insane but later deemed competent to stand trial. Kemper was sentenced to life in prison and remains incarcerated, becoming one of the most notorious serial killers in U.S. history. The film explores his disturbing psychology and the failures of the mental health system that allowed his crimes to continue.
