Loring "Red" Nichols is a cornet-playing country boy who goes to New York in the 1920s full of musical ambition and principles. The band becomes a success, and Red gains fame for his innovative jazz style. At the peak of his fame, Red and Bobbie's daughter, Dorothy, develops polio, leaving her unable to walk. Devastated, Red puts his career on hold to focus on her recovery. Years later, Dorothy's determination to walk again inspires Red to return to music. He reunites the Five Pennies for a triumphant comeback, proving that family and perseverance triumph over adversity.
