Following the Second World War, a northern cannery combine negotiates for the purchase of a large tract of uncultivated Georgia farmland. The major portion of the land is owned by Julie Ann Warren and has already been optioned by her unscrupulous, draft dodging husband, Henry. Now the combine must also obtain two smaller plots - one owned by Henry's cousin Rad McDowell, a combat veteran struggling to adjust to civilian life, and the other by an elderly black couple, the Williamses, who have worked the land for generations. As the combine pressures the landowners to sell, tensions rise between Henry's greed and Julie Ann's growing moral qualms. Rad, disillusioned by war and suspicious of Henry's motives, becomes increasingly protective of the land and its people. The situation escalates when the combine resorts to intimidation tactics, forcing the community to confront issues of loyalty, justice, and the true value of their heritage. The film explores themes of postwar disillusionment, racial inequality, and the clash between progress and tradition in the changing American South.
