Honoré Panisse is dying, cheerfully, with friends, wife, and son at his side. He confesses to the priest in front of his friends; he insists that the doctor be truthful. But, he cannot bring himself to tell his son Cesariot that his real father is Marius, the absent son of César, Cesariot's godfather. Panisse leaves that to Fanny, the lad's mother. Dissembling that he's off to a better place, Panisse passes peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. After his death, Fanny must confront the difficult task of revealing the truth to Cesariot, who idolized Panisse as his father. The revelation shakes the young boy's world, forcing him to grapple with his identity and the complicated relationships within their close-knit community. Meanwhile, Marius, unaware of his son's existence, remains distant, leaving César to bridge the emotional gaps between the past and the future.
