Griff Bonnell and his brothers Wes and Chico arrive in an Arizona town. Griff is a reformed gunslinger, now working for the Attorney General's office, looking to arrest Howard Swain for mail robbery. Swain is one of landowner Jessica Drummond’s 40 hired guns. She rules the territory with an iron fist, allowing her reckless brother Brockie Drummond and his gang to terrorize the town. Brockie, a violent drunk, crosses the line when he murders Marshal Chisolm in cold blood. Griff steps in and pistol-whips Brockie into unconsciousness. Wes falls for Louvenie Spanger and decides to stay as the town's new sheriff, while Griff grows closer to Jessica after rescuing her when she's injured during a cyclone. Tensions rise as Jessica's men, Logan and Savage, ambush Griff in an alley. Chico, who was set to leave for California, saves Griff by killing Savage in the shootout. Jessica's men then try to turn the townspeople against the Bonnell brothers. Tragedy strikes when Wes is assassinated on his wedding day. Brockie is arrested for the murder but attempts to escape by using Jessica as a human shield, taunting Griff to shoot. To his shock, Griff fires, wounding Jessica and killing Brockie—marking the first life Griff has taken in a decade. In the aftermath, Chico stays behind as sheriff, while Griff prepares to leave, believing Jessica despises him for killing her brother. However, Jessica chases after him, and the two ride off together, leaving the town behind.
