In fourteenth-century England, peasant girl Christine Carpenter is deeply drawn to a statue of the Virgin Mary in the local church. The village priest, who harbors an illicit desire for her, manipulates her devotion by convincing her to become an anchoress—a holy woman sealed in a small cell within the church, tasked with praying for the villagers. Christine agrees, seeking spiritual fulfillment, but soon realizes the harsh reality of her confinement. When the priest falsely accuses Christine’s mother of witchcraft and has her put on trial, Christine is devastated. Defying the sacred vows of her anchorhold, she breaks free from her cell to save her mother. In doing so, she commits a grave sin in the eyes of the church, punishable by death. Now hunted as a fugitive, Christine must navigate a world that sees her as both a heretic and a criminal, while confronting the corruption and hypocrisy of those who once claimed to guide her soul. Her struggle becomes a fight for survival, justice, and her own humanity in a time of superstition and oppression.
