The lady is Mrs. Hilyard, a wealthy poetess who lives in a three-story city mansion. Her cage is her elevator, which stops a dozen feet short of the main floor due to an electrical failure on a July 4th weekend. Trapped and helpless, she rings her outside alarm, eventually catching the attention of a drunken derelict. The man breaks into the house but ignores her desperate pleas for help. Instead, he roams the mansion, stealing valuable items and helping himself to her alcohol. After leaving with his loot, he returns later with a plump prostitute and three teenage hoodlums. The group proceeds to terrorize Mrs. Hilyard, taunting her from outside the elevator as they ransack her home, destroy her possessions, and subject her to psychological torment.
