In the small Czech town of Jilemnice, the unfortunate yet brave and jovial woman Štěpa Kiliánová longed to fill the emptiness in her solitary life. Desperate for companionship and driven by misplaced trust, she married Pavel Malina, a sardonic and reclusive former lieutenant with a troubled past as a gambler. His only wish was to find peace and escape the memories that haunted him. Their marriage became a painful journey of unrequited love, mutual dislike, and deep disappointment. Unknown to Štěpa, Pavel began exhibiting early signs of a degenerative brain disease, which slowly consumed his sanity over the years. As his mind unraveled, their strained relationship faced even greater challenges, pushing Štěpa to her limits.
