Julian is a 12-year-old boy whose family is just scraping by in the Ruhr industrial region of Germany in the early 1960s. When his mother and younger sister go away for a while, he is left mostly alone in the apartment while his father works long shifts in the coal mine. Struggling with loneliness and the weight of responsibility, Julian must navigate the confusing world of adults, the rough dynamics of older boys, and the unsettling attention of the older girl next door. As tensions rise both at home and in his neighborhood, Julian finds himself caught in a web of emotions and conflicts that push him toward an unexpected coming-of-age journey.
