Lyle manages to convince David that if he can muster enough determination and strength, he can overcome his physical limitations. Together, they devise a plan to train David using unconventional methods, including drumming to build rhythm and coordination, and even recruiting local firemen to help with strength exercises. The school principal and a skeptical cop get drawn into their mission, initially as obstacles but eventually as reluctant supporters. The climax of their journey comes when David attempts a daring hand-walk across the school gymnasium, cheered on by classmates and the community they’ve inspired.
